I am a 4th Generation Washingtonian. I was led to Grandma’s House after our one-room shack with an outhouse of Douglas Street NE DC burned to the ground. I was around three-years old when my mother Mattie aka Mommy B woke up early one cold morning in November, and discovered there was no bread or milk for breakfast.

Thinking I was asleep, she slipped quietly out to the corner stone, leaving me with my German Shepherd dog Billy, and a kerosene lamp to keep us warn.

While returning home from the store, she noticed fire trucks parked in front of our shack. Thinking the worst, she dropped her groceries, and ran screaming toward the shack.

To her surprise she found me sitting the cold ground crying my eyes out with my dog Billy standing nearby.

My foundation was laid and built at Grandma’s House in NE DC. Grandma Amy Tyler Bell prepared me for the NE DC housing project called Parkside/Mayfair. She made one request after I got my career started with Petey Greene on Sunday evenings on WOL Radio in 1967–“To Always Tell The Truth!”

When children were in trouble and adults who had lost their way in “The Game Called Life”, they sought out Harold K. Bell to show them a better way to enhance their lives and careers.

The late superstar icon Dolly Parton’s rendition of the1980s “9 to 5” classic vocal brings to mind the benefactors of Kids In Trouble and Inside Sports, all had “9 to 5” jobs living from paycheck to paycheck. And there were those who had no pay checks.

• ESPN followed the Washington Post and came up with the brilliant idea of sports talk television. Under pressure from the politicians on Capitol Hill, the talk show host, writers and reporters via a memo from the President of the network saying, “Just Stick to Sports.” Sports talk is now a billion dollar industry.

Washington Post owner Donald Graham wants anonymity. He writes me a check after he and his mother stole my Inside Sports radio tag, took it to New York City and published Inside Sports Magazine. They failed and returned to DC after losing several million dollars-the ill fated journey would cost me millions of dollars after the copy write of Inside Sports.

What makes the Grahams different from President Richard Nixon and Water Gate?

The notorious Don King writes me a check for $8,000.00 after he deducts $2, 000.00 for a house warming gift for me and my wife Hattie.

I patiently waited for King to come to DC for one of his boxing promotions. My young brother, William aka Tyrik, King hired him as one of his photographers. I contacted Tyrik, and I asked him to be at the weight-in, and take a photo of me returning King’s check. The look on his face was definitely a “Kodak Moment.”

However, as major stories involving race, social justice, and sports policy emerged (particularly throughout 2018 and 2020), Pitaro clarified and adjusted his ESPN’s directive:

• The Adjustment for News Intersections: Pitaro specified that when a political or social issue directly intersected with sports—such as athlete activism, league policy decisions, or government legislation affecting athletics—ESPN journalists and hosts were fully permitted to cover, analyze, and discuss those political aspects as part of the sports story.

THIS WAS KNOWN AS THE HAROLD K. BELL AND INSIDE SPORTS RULE. FAR MORE EFFECTED THAN THE ROONEY RULE–THE INSIDE SPORTS FORMAT OPEN DOORS FOR BLACKS IN SPORTS MEDIA THAT HAD BEEN LOCKED FOR DECADES.

The history highlights how the foundation laid by Harold Bell and Inside Sports anticipated where sports media was ultimately forced to go.

When the Inside Sports talk radio and television format first expanded, network executives often tried to enforce a strict boundary separating athletics from broader societal issues. However, because sports continuously intersect with community, civil rights, culture, and legislation, keeping them completely isolated proved impossible.

Even when major networks eventually adjusted their guidelines to permit commentary on political and social issues that directly touch sports, many observers and long-time listeners noted that the coverage often felt constrained or corporate compared to THE ORIGINAL INSIDE SPORTS, unfiltered pioneering formats like Inside Sports, which addressed those community, cultural, and political dynamics head-on from the very start.
